Il termine software libero indica che l’utente ha un certo grado di libertà: libertà di eseguire il codice, di studiare i sorgenti, di cambiarli (o di pagare qualcuno per farlo), di ridistribuire il software e di pubblicarne versioni modificate. Sono le stesse libertà che ha un cuoco quando si diverte a sperimentare con le ricette. E non è una coincidenza: sia i programmi sia le ricette sono istruzioni per svolgere un lavoro.
Questo livello di libertà consente all’utente di controllare il software che usa; senza queste libertà sono invece i produttori di software che controllano l’utente.
Fin dai primi anni ‘80 chi usa un computer ha gradatamente perso questo grado di libertà e il movimento per il software libero è quindi nato per acquisirle nuovamente. La nostra attività principale è stata, fin dal 1984, lo sviluppo di software libero in alternativa al software non libero, così da permetterci di lavorare con i computer senza dover cedere la nostra libertà ai proprietari dei programmi.
Il freeware è invece una cosa diversa, poiché si riferisce quasi sempre a programmi disponibili solo in forma binaria. Potete eseguire e distribuire liberamente il programma, ma niente più. È un livello di libertà che ancora non vi consente di controllare il software che usate.
In che modo il software libero è correlato a quello open source?
Il movimento open source è stato fondato nel 1998 da persone che apprezzavano l’idea di software libero, ma non i nostri ideali. Il loro modo di operare si sovrappone in un certo modo a quello del movimento per il software libero: grazie a questo possiamo lavorare insieme su un certo numero di progetti.
A un livello strettamente ideologico, però, i due movimenti sono come il giorno e la notte. Per noi esistono ragioni sia pratiche sia etiche perché il software debba essere libero. Loro si guardano dal presentare il problema come una questione di etica e di principi, avendo scelto di concentrarsi sui vantaggi pratici del software libero e di convincere le aziende affinché lo realizzino.
Il movimento open source ha stimolato l’interesse di un buon numero di aziende e persone sullo sviluppo di software libero. Quindi, dal momento che i loro intenti sono simili ai nostri, non dobbiamo permetterci di criticarli. Oggi dobbiamo però fare qualcosa in più oltre a sviluppare software libero, perché troviamo un’esplicita opposizione da parte di molte grandi aziende, da Microsoft alla Disney: abbiamo bisogno dei fondamenti etici su cui si basa il movimento per il software libero.
Come è possibile sviluppare e distribuire software libero e cautelarsi affinché nessuno possa utilizzarlo come base per programmi non liberi?
Gli sviluppatori che realizzano software libero possono utilizzare la Gnu General Public License. Consente a tutti di usare, modificare e distribuire i programmi, ma ha una semplice restrizione: nessuno può aggiungere altre restrizioni al software. Questo concetto prende il nome di copyleft, dal momento che è come prendere il concetto di copyright e capovolgerlo.
Ti riconosci nel ritratto che Sam Williams ha tracciato di te nel suo libro?
In linea generale sì. Ci sono però alcuni errori importanti, soprattutto negli episodi che riguardano la Symbolics e Gosgling Emacs. Il primo capitolo è stato reso fin troppo narrativo, per cui non prestate troppa attenzione ai dettagli. Leggendo il libro sembra anche che Eric Raymond giochi un ruolo fondamentale nel progetto Gnu, ma in realtà non è così.
Di che cosa vive uno sviluppatore se realizza software libero?
La questione non è troppo importante, perché i programmatori volontari riescono a produrre abbastanza software libero perché tutti lo possano usare. Abbiamo più di mezzo milione di volontari e dubito che stiano tutti morendo di fame.
Alcuni sono probabilmente studenti, o pensionati, ma molti di loro hanno altri lavori e scrivono software libero nel tempo che gli rimane. Non vedo particolari problemi con questa soluzione fino a che funziona.
Realizzare software pubblico che non sia libero rappresenta una piccola frazione delle attività legate ai computer. Con l’adozione del software libero questa frazione potrebbe essere cancellata del tutto. Al contrario, il software libero crea delle nuove opportunità di lavoro: conosco persone che si guadagnano lo stipendio adattando software libero per un certo numero di clienti paganti.
Oggi è difficile dire se il software libero parteciperà ad aumentare l’occupazione in ambito informatico, possiamo solo fare delle supposizioni. I soldi che oggi aumentano la ricchezza dei produttori di software dovrebbero invece essere impiegati per assumere nuove persone.
Chi sono i veri nemici del software libero?
Microsoft è il nostro nemico e non lo nasconde. Oltre a lei ci sono le case discografiche e cinematografiche che tentano di proibire l’utilizzo e lo sviluppo di software libero. Il trusted computing è un piano progettato dalle grosse aziende quali Intel, Ibm e Microsoft, studiato in modo che il vostro computer obbedisca a loro e non a voi. Noi lo chiamiamo treacherous (sleale) computing e renderebbe il software libero impossibile da realizzare in molti casi. Se Word salva i vostri file utilizzando il treacherous computing, per esempio, sarà impossibile per chiunque scrivere del codice indipendente che legga i documenti scritti in Word.
La licenza Gpl è stata largamente usata e apprezzata nel corso degli ultimi anni. Le grosse aziende (come Sun e Ibm) incoraggiano l’uso e l’integrazione del software libero, come Gnu/Linux. Secondo te, quanti di questi comportamenti sono mossi da vero interesse nel movimento del software libero (e i suoi principi) e quanti, invece, sono legati a scopi pubblicitari?
Posso solo fare congetture sulla loro vera motivazione: la mia opinione è che non sia nessuna delle due che hai detto. Dubito che Sun o Ibm sviluppino o usino software libero solamente per farsi pubblicità, avranno in mente dei benefici più diretti e pratici. Lo fanno sicuramente per spirito di profitto, non sicuramente per principio.
Qualunque sia il motivo, quanto queste aziende sviluppano software libero, contribuiscono alla nostra comunità. Per questo motivo non sottilizzo su quali siano i loro scopi, ma penso sia in ogni caso una buona mossa. Li critico invece quando sviluppano software che non è libero o quando ci impediscono di farlo.
Un hacker cerca di migliorare un programma realizzato da altri, aggiungendo nuove funzionalità e correggendo eventuali inefficienze. Ci sono situazioni in cui questo non è possibile, ed è meglio ricominciare da zero?
Puoi quasi sempre migliorare un programma riscrivendolo da capo, ma è un sacco di lavoro, tanto che i benefici non superano quasi mai lo sforzo. Cambiare semplicemente le parti interessate è invece molto meno impegnativo.

C’è un software distribuito sotto licenza Gpl di cui sei particolarmente orgoglioso?
Di tutti i programmi che ho scritto, quello che mi piace di più è Gnu Emacs, l’editor di testi, perché lo usi tutto il giorno, tutti i giorni.
Il software libero può essere utilizzato anche in ambienti quali gli uffici o è ancora un po’ difficile da usare per una segretaria?
Nel 1984 decidemmo di sviluppare un sistema operativo simile a Unix, e lo chiamammo Gnu. All’inizio degli anni ’90 i primi sistemi Gnu/Linux erano quindi come Unix: potenti come Unix e facili da imparare come Unix (il che vuol dire non abbastanza facili da imparare).
Oggi però il sistema dispone di una serie di interfacce grafiche che lo rendono sufficientemente facile da utilizzare. In Brasile, nelle vicinanze di San Paolo, ho visitato un centro informatico attrezzato in modo che gli abitanti potessero imparare a usare il computer e accedere a Internet. Tutti i computer dispongono di Gnu/Linux, e sebbene queste persone siano alle prime armi, non hanno nessun problema a utilizzare il nostro sistema operativo.

I must admit, the mount of times I have downloaded so called free software only to find out you have to input your card details to be able to use the full version. Lets face it, nothing is for free is it. Even if you dont have to pay money or cash, they use your email address to send you loads of updates and pass your email to others to do the same. Good post though.
