SeaMonkey: l’erede di Netscape e Mozilla procede verso la 2.0
Infusione di tecnologie tratte da Firefox per il progetto indipendente di suite Internet rivolto a chi vuole uno strumento integrato per navigazione, posta, chat ed altro ancora
Il team di SeaMonkey ha annunciato la disponibilità di una versione preliminare del browser tuttofare, erede delle suite Netscape/Mozilla.
SeaMonkey 2.0 Alpha 1 non supporterà più Windows 98 né Mac OS X 10.3 per modifiche sostanziose al backend ma porterà in dote numerose novità rispetto alla attuale versione stabile, la 1.1.12. Citiamo la riduzione della memoria occupata, varie migliorie al motore grafico, un maggiore supporto agli standard web (supera il test Acid2 e buona parte dell’Acid3) e una gestione degli add-on simile a quella di Firefox.
In altre parole Seamonkey sta adottando molte se non proprio tutte le tecnologie già presenti nelle ultime evoluzioni di Firefox, applicandole però alla formula “tutto in uno” che include oltre al browser, anche un programma per le email e i newsgroup, un client di chat IRC e uno per la creazione di pagine web. È una formula che a molti potrà sembrare superata ma che ha i suoi fautori soprattutto gli sviluppatori. Quando Mozilla ha pensionato la sua suite per mancanza di energie e interesse un gruppo di programmatori ne ha raccolto il testimone e dopo tre anni SeaMonkey è ancora in attività, a differenza di altri progetti anche più blasonati e ufficiali come Minimo.
