Miro Video Converter: per esportare video in WebM
La codifica nel nuovo formato di Google è già alla portata di chiunque: grazie a un’utility per Windows e Mac
Il modo più facile e rapido di salvare i filmati in WebM, il nuovo formato open source e libero da brevetti di Google?
È quello offerto da Miro Video Converter, un’utility gratuita che deriva dal software di riproduzione e download di Bit Torrent, Miro.
Il programma è disponibile in due versioni, una per Windows e l’altra per Macintosh ed è un front-end grafico per il software free ffmpeg tra i primi a implementare il sistema di compressione VP8 scelto da Google.
A differenza di ffmpeg l’uso di Miro Video Converter è elementare e rivolto anche a un pubblico non specializzato.
Nella finestra del programma è presente un’area superiore in cui trascinare (o da cui selezionare) il file da convertire. In basso si trova un menù a tendina per scegliere il formato di esportazione desiderato. A questo punto basta premere il pulsante “Convert!” in fondo.
Il risultato dela conversione sarà un file con estensione .webm da mettere online e fruire via web con i browser che già supportano il formato (come l’ultimo Google Chrome). Per l’embedding nelle pagine web si può usare il tag <video> dell’HTML5, allo stesso modo di come si fa con gli MP4 e gli Ogg Theora.
Da alcune prove effettuate l’utility converte in .webm numerosi container e codec anche se non tutti.
Non ci sono stati problemi con .mov, .avi e .flv con le tracce video codificate in H.264, MPEG-4, VP6 ma anche Cinepak e Photo JPEG. Il codec Sorenson invece ha dato errore in alcuni casi e purtroppo tutti i tentativi fatti con .ogg con il codec Theora sono andati a vuoto.
* Nota: gli utenti Unix/Linux possono invece usare il programma Transmageddon Video Converter, che è invece basato su GStreamer.

I should point out that the quality of the WebM; movie was good maybe not as sharp as the H.264 but at 3Mb who’s complaining. However the audio track was a little bit thin and ‘tinny’ probably due to the 64k encoding preset rate for the Vorbis audio track. Miro is updated regularly so I expect to see an improvement in the audio bit rate for WebM .
