Turntable.fm: musica, social network e un’incredibile operazione di riciclaggio
ovvero: Come passare da un sito e app che permette di “giocare” e organizzare promozioni usando i codici a barre dei prodotti, a un incrocio tra una chat “social” e un concorrente di Spotify…
Ci si passi la battuta: devono essere davvero degli “ecologisti”, dalle parti di StickyBits.com, perché “riciclarsi” in questo modo non è da tutti; stiamo parlando di una società - che ora ha solo 3 dipendenti - passata da un sito - ed app per iPhone - incentrato sui codici a barre, coi quali costruire giochi, concorsi, promozioni, ma anche commenti e contenuti autoprodotti, a una sorta di concorrente di Spotify con aspetti social portati all’esasperazione.
C’era una volta StickyBits; e “una volta” non è poi molto tempo fa, visto che il sito nasce nel 2010. E in effetti c’è ancora, perché il sito sembra ancora attivo anche se non risultano operazioni promozionali in evidenza, al momento.
Come e perché si sia giunti da questa idea a un settore del tutto diverso e quindi a trasformarsi in turntable.fm (servizio peraltro purtroppo limitato agli Stati Uniti, al momento) è tutto da capire. Certo, probabilmente si attira più pubblico - e quindi denaro - con gli stream musicali che con i codici a barre, ma un cambiamento così repentino e apparentemente immotivato lascia quantomeno stupiti, se non perplessi.
Ad ogni modo, quale che sia la storia “dietro le quinte”, va dato atto che turntable.fm ha già messo in tasca due risultati: una licenza di una delle “SIAE” americane (BMI) e l’essere riuscito a far parlare di sé al punto tale che dalle parti di Silicon Valley questo servizio cominci ad essere visto come “una minaccia alla produttività”. Già, perché con le sue funzioni social, i collegamenti con popolari network e siti, la possibilità di “fare il dj” condividendo la propria playlist (o ascoltare le playlist degli altri dj online al momento) in una serie di chat room, questo sito starebbe rapidamente diventando anche peggio di Facebook come “distrazione” da ufficio.
A proposito di Facebook: occorre un account su questo social network per accedere a turntable.fm; il mese scorso, come segnalava Adrianne Jeffries su Betabeat - lo stesso Mark Zuckerberg è apparso tra i partecipanti a una delle chat.
Si possono caricare i propri brani o attingere alla libreria del vecchissimo Medianet (un tempo Musicnet) che ancora resiste e comunque contiene milioni di brani di artisti major e indipendenti.
Tra i primi commenti di chi ha potuto provarlo, molti sembrano entusiasti e sottolineano che è un utilizzo intelligente e innovativo del “social“. Chi scrive - che però al momento non ha ancora avuto il piacere di testare direttamente - resta perplesso: dopotutto anche in Spotify si possono condividere playlist (e vedere quelle dei propri contatti Facebook, per esempio) per non parlare della musica condivisa nelle chatroom dei mondi virtuali (IMVU, NuVera, Second Life) che è una realtà ormai da anni.
Ma dopotutto chissà: l’abile animatore di questa dubbia operazione - il CEO Billy Chasen - potrà sempre inventarsi un altro nome, sito o servizio in cui riciclarsi, tra 6-8 mesi…
