CD Baby: 200 milioni di dollari pagati agli indipendenti
Dalle umili origini ai fasti dell’era digitale: ancora un traguardo importante, per il più grande distributore di musica indipendente
Chi scrive ricorda di aver cominciato a utilizzare CD Baby intorno al 2002, e che all’epoca era un servizio per la vendita di cd fisici; il sito, dalle umili origini - era nato come situazione casalinga per vendere il materiale della band del fondatore Derek Sivers - era cresciuto pian piano e, non essendosi per molti anni lasciato tentare dalle lusinghe di grossi investitori o di quel Nasdaq che aveva stritolato tante startup della musica digitale, era arrivato a diventare un “aggregatore” ossia un distributore digitale che agisce da intermediario tra una miriade di artisti e piccole etichette indipendenti e i grandi servizi come Apple iTunes. E ricorda i tempi in cui CD Baby era fiero di poter dire di aver pagato quasi 90 milioni di dollari ai propri artisti, la volta in cui pagò i propri artisti la notte di Natale o quando a sorpresa annunciò di aver incassato ben 600.000 dollari con la vendita diretta di mp3 sul proprio sito, il tutto senza neanche minimamente pubblicizzare la cosa.
Derek Sivers da qualche anno non è più al timone della società ceduta a Disc Makers, ma CD Baby pur con qualche occasionale problemino e con piccoli e grandi restyling è andato avanti nel solco tracciato tanto tempo fa.
Il risultato annunciato il 15 novembre 2011 è un segno importante: CD Baby è un punto di riferimento unico per gli indipendenti; primo fornitore di iTunes per numero di brani, ha finalmente doppiato la soglia di ben 200 milioni di dollari distribuiti.
E’ il presidente Brian Felsen a dare l’annuncio in un comunicato ufficiale. E a festeggiare lanciando alcune offerte speciali per gli artisti, con il codice di sconto “200MILLION”, che saranno valide fino al 23 novembre. Ossia per 200 ore dall’annuncio.
